How do you pronounce "clove?" Okay, now take the "c" off the front. The correct pronunciation for it is different from the original for no apparent reason. Its just the way it is.
Now say "wire." Is it one syllable or two? We say it like it is two syllables ("why-er"), but there is really only one.
Now say "baked." Easy enough, right? Okay, then, replace the first letter with an "n." Changes doesn't it. Again, no rhyme or reason. That is just the way it is.
When a young person, international, or I make a mistake pronouncing a word, give us a break. With so many rules which are only followed half the time, it is hard to know how to say a lot of words.
